      Gastric Sleeve

Gastric sleeve surgery, or sleeve gastrectomy, is a highly effective procedure for achieving long-term weight loss and supporting a healthy lifestyle by reducing the size of the stomach.

What is a gastric sleeve ?

Gastric sleeve surgery, or sleeve gastrectomy, is a highly effective bariatric procedure designed to help individuals achieve significant and sustainable weight loss. During the surgery, approximately 80% of the stomach is surgically removed, leaving behind a smaller, tube-shaped “sleeve.” This drastic reduction in stomach size limits the amount of food a person can consume at one time, significantly reducing overall calorie intake. As a result, patients often feel full after eating much smaller portions. Beyond just weight loss, gastric sleeve surgery can also improve or resolve various obesity-related health conditions, such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and sleep apnea. The procedure is particularly beneficial for those who have struggled to lose weight through diet and exercise alone and are seeking a long-term solution to manage their weight and improve their overall health. Although the surgery is not a quick fix, it serves as a powerful tool to help individuals make lasting changes to their lifestyle, leading to improved quality of life and better long-term health outcomes.

Benefits of Gastric Sleeve Surgery :

      Transformative Weight Loss Results:

One of the most significant advantages of gastric sleeve surgery is its ability to facilitate dramatic and lasting weight loss. Patients typically shed 50-70% of their excess weight within the first year after surgery, with continued progress over time. This major reduction in body weight is primarily due to the reduction in stomach size, which limits food intake and helps individuals develop healthier eating habits. As a result, many patients experience noticeable changes in their appearance, energy levels, and overall health, leading to greater self-confidence and a healthier lifestyle.

Positive Impact on Obesity-Related Health Issues:

Gastric sleeve surgery often leads to remarkable improvements in several obesity-related health conditions. Conditions such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension (high blood pressure), sleep apnea, and high cholesterol frequently improve or even resolve after significant weight loss. The reduction in body weight enhances the body’s ability to regulate insulin, improves cardiovascular health, and reduces the risk of developing life-threatening diseases. By addressing these health issues, gastric sleeve surgery not only aids in weight loss but also offers long-term health benefits, promoting a more vibrant, disease-free life.

      Enhanced Well-Being and Lifestyle:

Beyond the physical benefits, gastric sleeve surgery significantly enhances a patient’s overall quality of life. With significant weight loss, many individuals experience increased mobility and the ability to engage in activities that were once challenging or impossible due to excess weight. This newfound energy and freedom enable patients to lead a more active lifestyle and participate in hobbies or activities they may have avoided in the past. Furthermore, the boost in self-esteem and confidence often translates into improved mental well-being, allowing individuals to feel more comfortable in social situations and pursue personal goals. In essence, gastric sleeve surgery can drastically improve both physical and emotional health, providing patients with the tools for a more fulfilling, joyful life.

      How Gastric Sleeve Surgery Works?

      Procedure Overview:

During gastric sleeve surgery, the surgeon removes a significant portion of the stomach, leaving behind a tube-shaped structure that resembles the size and shape of a banana. This surgical alteration significantly reduces the stomach’s capacity, allowing patients to feel full more quickly and helping them consume fewer calories overall. The procedure not only supports weight loss by limiting food intake but also encourages healthier eating habits as the body adjusts to its new, smaller stomach size.

      Impact on Hunger Hormones:

In addition to reducing stomach size, gastric sleeve surgery also lowers the production of ghrelin, the hormone responsible for stimulating hunger. With less ghrelin circulating in the body, patients often experience a noticeable decrease in appetite and cravings. This hormonal change helps to control hunger and makes it easier for patients to stick to a reduced-calorie diet, further contributing to long-term weight loss success.

Is Gastric Sleeve Surgery Right for You?

Eligibility Criteria for Gastric Sleeve Surgery:

Gastric sleeve surgery is typically recommended for individuals who have a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or higher, or for those with a BMI of 35 or higher who also suffer from obesity-related health conditions, such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, or sleep apnea. This procedure is often considered for individuals who have struggled to lose weight through traditional methods, such as diet and exercise, and who have not achieved long-term weight loss success. It is also suitable for patients who are ready to commit to lasting lifestyle changes and are seeking a more permanent solution to manage their weight and improve overall health.

      Preparing for Gastric Sleeve Surgery:

Proper preparation is essential for ensuring the success of gastric sleeve surgery. Patients are generally required to undergo several pre-surgery evaluations to ensure they are in optimal health before the procedure. These assessments may include:

      • Medical Evaluations:

A thorough medical evaluation is conducted to assess overall health, identify any potential risks, and ensure that the patient is physically prepared for surgery. This includes a review of medical history, blood tests, and an examination of existing health conditions that may impact the surgery.

      • Nutritional Counseling:

Since the surgery significantly alters the way the body processes food, patients will typically meet with a nutritionist or dietitian. Nutritional counseling helps individuals understand the dietary changes they will need to make after surgery, including adopting a balanced, nutrient-rich diet and ensuring they meet their body’s nutritional needs with smaller meal portions.

      • Psychological Assessments:

Gastric sleeve surgery is not just a physical transformation; it is a psychological one as well. Psychological assessments are often required to determine whether patients are emotionally and mentally prepared for the challenges that come with the surgery and the lifestyle changes it requires. Addressing any mental health concerns or unrealistic expectations before surgery can improve long-term success rates.

      Lifestyle Changes for Success:

One of the most important aspects of preparing for gastric sleeve surgery is committing to certain lifestyle changes both before and after the procedure. These changes are crucial for the long-term success of the surgery and for maintaining a healthy weight. Some of the key lifestyle changes include:

      • Balanced Nutrition:

Following surgery, patients must adopt a diet that includes smaller, more frequent meals that are rich in essential nutrients. The focus will be on high-protein, low-calorie foods, and avoiding empty calories or foods high in sugar and fat. Patients will need to adjust to new eating habits that support weight loss while ensuring they get enough vitamins and minerals for optimal health.

      • Increased Physical Activity:

Regular physical activity is a vital part of the weight loss journey. Patients are encouraged to gradually incorporate exercise into their daily routine to help burn calories, improve cardiovascular health, and increase overall fitness levels. Exercise also plays a key role in maintaining weight loss and improving mood and energy levels.

      • Cessation of Smoking:

Smoking can interfere with the healing process and increase the risk of complications after surgery. As such, individuals who smoke are generally advised to quit prior to surgery. Stopping smoking will also have positive long-term effects on overall health, including improved lung function and reduced risk of heart disease.

Preparing for gastric sleeve surgery involves more than just the procedure itself; it requires a commitment to a healthier lifestyle, a willingness to make lasting changes, and a focus on both physical and mental well-being. When patients fully embrace these changes, they are more likely to experience significant and sustainable weight loss while improving their overall quality of life.

According to studies, in the first month, patients can lose 10% of their total weight; between 18 and 24 months, the total loss may vary from 40% to 60%

      Post-Surgery Recovery and Care:

      Immediate Post-Surgery:

      Immediate Post-Surgery Recovery:

Following gastric sleeve surgery, patients will begin a structured recovery process, which includes a gradual transition from a liquid diet to soft foods and, eventually, to regular meals. In the initial phase, it’s important to allow the stomach to heal while ensuring proper hydration and getting the necessary nutrients. Patients will be guided through this process to ensure they follow the appropriate diet progression, which typically starts with clear liquids and progresses to pureed foods and soft solids. Adhering to these dietary steps helps minimize complications and supports the healing process.

      Long-Term Success and Maintenance:

Achieving long-term success after gastric sleeve surgery requires ongoing dedication to both diet and lifestyle. Key factors for maintaining weight loss and improving overall health include:

      • Adhering to Dietary Guidelines:

Patients must continue to follow specific dietary recommendations designed to promote weight loss, ensure proper nutrition, and prevent potential complications. This includes consuming smaller, more frequent meals that are rich in protein, vitamins, and minerals while avoiding high-calorie, high-sugar, and high-fat foods.

      • Regular Physical Activity:

Exercise is an essential part of the post-surgery lifestyle. Incorporating regular physical activity into daily life helps to burn calories, maintain muscle mass, and enhance overall well-being. Patients are encouraged to gradually increase their activity level, starting with light walking and progressing to more strenuous exercises as they become comfortable.

      • Ongoing Medical Follow-up:

Regular check-ups with a healthcare provider or bariatric surgeon are crucial for monitoring progress, addressing any concerns, and making adjustments to the patient’s care plan as needed. These follow-up visits are important for tracking weight loss, nutritional status, and the patient’s physical and emotional well-being.

How Is Gastric Sleeve Surgery Performed?

Gastric sleeve surgery is typically performed using the laparoscopic technique, a minimally invasive method that requires only small incisions. Unlike traditional open surgery, which involves large cuts, laparoscopic surgery involves making several tiny (around 0.5 cm) incisions through which a camera and surgical instruments are inserted. This allows the surgeon to clearly view the surgical area on a high-resolution monitor, enabling precision and minimizing recovery time.

The procedure is done under general anesthesia, and during the surgery, approximately 80% of the stomach is removed using surgical staplers to create a tube-like structure. A critical aspect of the surgery is ensuring proper control of bleeding at the suture line, where the stomach is reshaped. To confirm the integrity of the sutures and check for any potential leaks, special dyes are used to inflate the stomach. Once the checks are complete, the surgical instruments are removed, and a drainage system is placed to assist with recovery.

      Recovery Chart

All medical circles have accepted the effectiveness of anti-obesity treatments performed with minimally invasive surgical techniques. Hundreds of thousands of people annually choose these treatments to regain their health.

Who can undergo gastric sleeve surgery?

Gastric sleeve surgery is generally recommended for individuals aged 18-65, although exceptions may be made for those outside this age range based on medical evaluations and special circumstances determined by healthcare professionals. It is suitable for individuals with a body mass index (BMI) over 35, as well as those with a BMI between 30-35 who also have weight-related health conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, or sleep apnea. The procedure is also considered for those who have not achieved successful weight loss through other methods, such as diet and exercise. Finally, candidates must be deemed healthy enough to undergo surgery and anesthesia by a qualified medical team.

      Post-operative life:

The post-operative period marks a fresh start for patients, focusing on significant lifestyle changes to support recovery and long-term success. Patients are encouraged to follow a high-protein, low-carbohydrate diet, guided by a nutritionist, and to eat smaller, more frequent meals. It’s essential to chew food thoroughly to aid digestion. In addition, patients are advised to take supplements, including multivitamins, calcium, and vitamin D, to ensure they meet their nutritional needs. Regular physical activity plays a key role in maintaining weight loss and improving overall health. Due to the reduced stomach capacity, most patients adjust well to smaller portions, experiencing improved control over their food intake.

      Is Gastric Sleeve Surgery Safe?

Like all surgical procedures, gastric sleeve surgery carries inherent risks, though the laparoscopic approach is typically considered to be of low to moderate risk. The overall complication rate for gastric sleeve surgery is around 1%, with most complications being manageable, such as minor bleeding or leaks. In rare cases, more severe complications like embolism, breathing problems, or injury to nearby organs can occur. However, with careful pre-operative screening and vigilant post-operative care, these risks are generally minimized and manageable.

      Cost of gastric sleeve surgery:

The cost of gastric sleeve surgery can vary based on factors such as the specific procedures performed, the clinic, the location, and the level of post-operative care offered. Gastric Sleeve Recovery Time

Recovery time after gastric sleeve surgery can differ from person to person, generally taking between two to four weeks. During this period, it’s crucial for patients to strictly adhere to their surgeon’s post-operative guidelines, which may include specific dietary restrictions, activity limits, and prescribed medication schedules. Ensuring adequate rest and proper nutrition during recovery is essential for promoting healing and reducing the risk of complications. Additionally, attending regular follow-up appointments with healthcare providers is vital for monitoring progress, addressing any concerns, and ensuring the patient’s recovery is on track.

      Gastric Sleeve FAQ

How long does the gastric sleeve last?

Gastric sleeve gastrectomy is a permanent and irreversible surgical procedure. Once a large portion of the stomach is removed, it cannot be restored to its original form. The effects of the surgery are designed to last a lifetime, supporting long-term weight loss and health improvement when paired with lasting lifestyle changes.

By the second year following sleeve gastrectomy, most patients have successfully adapted to their new lifestyle and established healthy routines. As the active weight loss phase tapers off, many individuals report a noticeable boost in energy levels, improved physical performance, and a greater sense of well-being. This stage often marks a transition from rapid change to long-term maintenance and stability.

Following gastric sleeve surgery, the sensation of hunger typically decreases significantly but does not vanish entirely. Due to the reduced size of the stomach and the lowered production of hunger-related hormones like ghrelin, appetite becomes much more manageable. Most patients find it easier to control cravings and portion sizes, which supports long-term weight loss and healthier eating habits.

Postoperative leaks following sleeve gastrectomy are most likely to occur within the first 5 to 7 days after surgery. The risk significantly decreases after the 10th day, making such complications extremely rare beyond this point. For this reason, the first week after surgery is a critical period for monitoring and recovery. Close medical supervision and strict adherence to post-operative guidelines during this time are essential to ensure proper healing and to promptly address any potential issues.

Gastric sleeve surgery, also known as sleeve gastrectomy, is a bariatric procedure that involves removing a significant portion of the stomach. This results in a smaller, tube-shaped stomach that not only limits the amount of food a person can consume but also reduces the production of hunger-related hormones. By both restricting calorie intake and decreasing appetite, the procedure supports sustainable weight loss and helps individuals adopt healthier eating habits.

Achieving optimal results after sleeve gastrectomy requires active participation in your recovery and lifestyle changes. Gentle daily walks are highly encouraged starting shortly after surgery, as they promote circulation, support healing, and help prevent complications. As your recovery progresses, incorporating regular exercise becomes key to long-term success. It is generally recommended to begin gym-based or more intense physical activities after 4 to 6 weeks, with your doctor’s approval, to further enhance weight loss and improve overall health.

Starting on the second day after sleeve gastrectomy, you can begin consuming clear liquids to support hydration and gentle nourishment. These include water, strained meat, bone, chicken, or vegetable broths, as well as light compotes. You may also incorporate protein shakes and probiotic drinks into your daily intake to support healing and gut health. Additionally, one cup of decaffeinated coffee or herbal tea is allowed during the day. This stage is crucial for easing your digestive system back into function while ensuring you receive essential nutrients.

Smoking, like all forms of tobacco and drug use, hinders cell regeneration and has harmful effects on the heart and lungs. As you begin this new chapter after your surgery, quitting smoking is strongly recommended to support healing, protect your overall health, and enhance the long-term success of your weight loss journey. While technically it may be possible to resume smoking a month after surgery, doing so poses significant health risks and can compromise your recovery. Embracing a smoke-free lifestyle is one of the most impactful choices you can make for a healthier future.

Gastric sleeve gastrectomy is a permanent, lifelong procedure designed to support sustained weight loss and improved health. Most patients experience significant weight reduction within the first 12 to 18 months following surgery, with progress often continuing for up to two years or more. This period is critical for establishing healthy habits that will help maintain long-term results and enhance overall well-being.

Gastric sleeve surgery—also referred to as sleeve gastrectomy or vertical sleeve gastrectomy—is a widely performed bariatric procedure aimed at promoting significant weight loss. By surgically reducing the size of the stomach, this operation limits the amount of food that can be consumed, helping patients feel full more quickly and eat less overall. As a result, it serves as an effective tool for those struggling with obesity to achieve long-term weight management and improved health.
