      Laser Eye Surgery

Laser eye surgery, also known as refractive surgery, is an advanced procedure aimed at correcting common vision issues such as myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism. By reshaping the cornea using precise laser technology, this treatment can significantly reduce or even eliminate the need for glasses or contact lenses.

Laser eye surgery—also known as refractive surgery—is a safe, effective, and popular procedure designed to correct common vision problems such as myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism. These conditions occur when the shape of the eye prevents light from focusing directly on the retina, resulting in blurred or distorted vision.

Using advanced laser technology, this procedure carefully reshapes the cornea—the clear front part of the eye—so that light can properly focus on the retina. The result is clearer, sharper vision and, in many cases, a reduced or even eliminated need for glasses or contact lenses.

At Sava Clinic, our experienced ophthalmologists are dedicated to providing exceptional care. We use state-of-the-art laser platforms and diagnostic tools to ensure that each procedure is customized to your unique eye anatomy and visual needs. From your initial consultation to post-surgery follow-ups, your comfort, safety, and satisfaction are our top priorities.

How is Laser Eye Surgery Performed?

Laser eye surgery is a precise and carefully controlled procedure that corrects refractive vision problems through a series of well-defined steps. Here’s how it works:

      1. Preparation

Before the procedure begins, the eye is numbed using anesthetic eye drops to ensure complete comfort. A gentle eyelid holder (speculum) is then placed to keep the eye open during the surgery.

      2. Creating the Corneal Flap (for LASIK)

In LASIK (Laser-Assisted in Situ Keratomileusis), a thin flap is created on the cornea. This can be done with a microkeratome (a precise surgical blade) or a femtosecond laser for added accuracy and safety. The flap is gently lifted to allow access to the underlying corneal tissue.

      3. Reshaping the Cornea

An excimer laser is used to remove microscopic layers of corneal tissue, reshaping the curvature of the cornea to correct refractive errors such as myopia, hyperopia, or astigmatism. This step is guided by a personalized treatment plan based on detailed eye measurements.

      4. Repositioning or Regenerating the Surface

        • In LASIK, the corneal flap is carefully repositioned after the laser reshaping is complete. It naturally adheres without the need for sutures and begins to heal immediately.

        • In PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy), no flap is created. Instead, the thin outer layer of the cornea (epithelium) is gently removed, and the corneal surface reshapes itself over time as the epithelium regenerates.

Each method has its own advantages, and the choice between LASIK and PRK depends on your eye health, corneal thickness, lifestyle, and your surgeon’s recommendation.

      Results of Laser Eye Surgery

Laser eye surgery provides a range of life-changing advantages for those seeking greater visual freedom and convenience:

      • Enhanced Visual Clarity

The majority of patients achieve 20/20 vision or better, dramatically reducing—or even eliminating—the need for glasses or contact lenses in daily life.

      • Rapid Recovery Time

Vision often begins to improve within just 24 hours after the procedure, with many patients resuming normal activities shortly thereafter.

      • Long-Lasting Results

The visual correction achieved through laser eye surgery is typically permanent. While natural age-related changes in vision may still occur over time, the core results of the procedure remain stable for many years.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Laser Eye Surgery

      Advantages of Laser Eye Surgery

      • High Success Rate

The procedure boasts an excellent success rate, with the majority of patients achieving significantly improved vision and reduced dependence on corrective lenses.

      • Quick and Efficient

Laser eye surgery is typically completed within 15 to 30 minutes for both eyes, making it a convenient outpatient procedure.

      • Minimal Discomfort

Thanks to advanced techniques and numbing eye drops, most patients report little to no pain during or after the surgery.

      • Fast Recovery

Visual recovery is often rapid, with many patients noticing improvements within 24 hours and returning to regular activities soon after.

      Potential Disadvantages

      • Temporary Side Effects

Some patients may experience dry eyes, glare, halos around lights, or reduced night vision, particularly in the early healing stages.

      • Risk of Complications

While rare, complications such as infection, under-correction, or over-correction can occur and may require additional treatment.

      • Not Suitable for Everyone

Individuals with certain medical conditions, autoimmune disorders, or corneal irregularities may not be eligible candidates for the procedure. A thorough eye examination is essential to determine suitability.

Who is Suitable for Laser Eye Surgery?

Laser eye surgery is a safe and effective solution for many people, but not everyone is a suitable candidate. The following criteria are generally used to determine eligibility:

      • Age Requirement

Candidates should be 18 years or older, with vision that has remained stable for at least one year.

      • Stable Prescription

Individuals must have a consistent eyeglass or contact lens prescription, indicating that their vision is no longer changing significantly.

      • Healthy Eyes

The eyes should be free from serious conditions such as severe dry eye, cataracts, glaucoma, or corneal diseases, which could affect the success of the surgery.

      • Good General Health

Ideal candidates are in overall good health and free from autoimmune disorders or other systemic conditions that could interfere with healing.

      • Informed and Realistic Expectations

Patients should understand the potential benefits, risks, and limitations of the procedure and have realistic expectations about the outcomes.

      Frequently Asked Questions About Laser

How long does laser eye surgery last?

Laser eye surgery results are usually permanent, but age-related changes may lead to the need for reading glasses or future enhancements.

Most patients resume normal activities within a day or two, with laser eye surgery greatly reducing or eliminating the need for glasses or contacts.

After laser eye surgery, the cornea is precisely reshaped to correct refractive errors, enabling light to focus accurately on the retina. Healing starts right away, and most patients notice clearer vision within the first 24 hours.

Laser eye surgery is generally safe, but like any procedure, it carries some risks. Choosing a skilled surgeon and a trusted clinic like Sava Clinic helps reduce these risks and ensures optimal results.

      Prof. Dr. Rıfat Rasier

      MD

      BIOGRAPHY

During his medical education and specialization in ophthalmology, he attended Louisiana State University School of Medicine in the United States, Stadtisches Klinikum Kemperhof in Koblenz, Germany, and The Western Eye Hospital, Imperial College in England. In 2007, he received medical equivalence from the General Medical Council of England and became a fully registered doctor in England. In addition to his ophthalmology education, he completed a master's program in Biomedical Engineering at Boğaziçi University in 2009. Continuing his career development without slowing down, Rasier completed his specialization in Ophthalmology at Bilim University in 2010.
He fulfilled his mandatory service at Kırklareli State Hospital in 2012.
He attained the title of "Associate Professor" in the Department of Ophthalmology in 2016. He completed his PhD in Biomedical Engineering at Boğaziçi University with a 4.0 GPA in 2017.
As a result of his work at the Biomedical Engineering Laboratory of Boğaziçi University, Rıfat Rasier developed a procedure for laser-welding incisions in the transparent layer of the eye during cataract surgery, thereby closing the incision without the need for sutures. Current cataract surgeries either leave incisions open or suture them. Laser tissue welding experiments yielded positive results in closing incisions without stitches, reducing infection risks and shortening operation times.
This work by Rıfat Rasier was published in an international book titled "Infrared Lasers for Corneal Tissue Welding."
      Awards Received:
Best Publication Award, Turkish Journal of Ophthalmology, 2010: "Corneal Tissue Welding with Infrared Lasers of Different Wavelengths in Transparent Corneal Sections."
