Bichectomy (Buccal Fat Removal)
Bichectomy, also known as buccal fat removal, is a cosmetic surgical procedure designed to reduce excess fullness in the cheeks by removing the buccal fat pads. This treatment refines the midface area, enhancing overall facial contour by creating a slimmer, more sculpted appearance.
What is Bichectomy?
Buccal fat removal, also known as bichectomy, is a refined cosmetic surgical procedure designed to reduce excess fullness in the lower cheeks. Through small incisions made inside the mouth, the surgeon accesses and removes the buccal fat pads—natural fat deposits that can give the face a rounder or fuller appearance.
By selectively removing these fat pads, the procedure enhances midface definition, resulting in slimmer cheeks, sharper cheekbones, and a more contoured, sculpted facial profile. Buccal fat removal is typically performed under local anaesthesia, involves minimal downtime, and delivers long-lasting results. When performed by a skilled surgeon, it offers a subtle yet impactful enhancement to facial harmony.
Who is a Good Candidate for Bichectomy?
Buccal fat removal, commonly referred to as bichectomy, is a cosmetic procedure suited for individuals with fuller cheeks who desire greater facial contour and definition. Ideal candidates are generally healthy adults over the age of 18, who maintain a stable body weight but exhibit prominent buccal fat in the mid-face region.
During the procedure, small incisions are made inside the mouth to access and remove or reduce the buccal fat pads, which can contribute to a rounded facial appearance. The result is a more sculpted, angular look, often associated with youthfulness and refined bone structure.
Recovery is typically straightforward, but it varies from person to person. Following post-operative care instructions is essential to minimize swelling, promote healing, and achieve the best aesthetic outcome.
Recovery and Risks
Visible improvements from bichectomy usually begin to appear within approximately 14 days following the procedure. During the recovery period, patients are advised to stick to soft foods and cold beverages to minimize the risk of bleeding and support healing. Additionally, avoiding direct sunlight is recommended, as it helps reduce swelling and prevents potential complications related to scar formation.
Adhering to these post-operative guidelines plays a vital role in ensuring a smooth recovery and achieving the desired aesthetic outcome.
Buccal fat removal cost
The cost of bichectomy can vary based on several key factors, including the surgeon’s experience, geographic location, and the facility’s pricing structure. Additional expenses such as anaesthesia fees, clinic or hospital charges, and post-operative care also contribute to the overall price.
Frequently Asked Questions about Bichectomy
Is Bichectomy safe?
Bichectomy is generally safe when performed by an experienced surgeon, but it carries risks like infection, bleeding, nerve injury, or asymmetry. Choosing a qualified professional and following care instructions helps minimize these risks and ensure optimal results.
Is Bichectomy the same as Buccal Fat Removal?
Yes, bichectomy and buccal fat removal are the same procedure, aiming to slim the face by removing buccal fat pads.
Can I eat after Bichectomy?
Yes, after bichectomy, eat soft, cold foods and avoid spicy or hot items to reduce discomfort and bleeding.
Who Looks Good with Buccal Fat Removal?
People with fuller cheeks often choose buccal fat removal to enhance cheekbones and jawline, especially if they are healthy and have realistic expectations.
How Long does the healing process take?
Bichectomy healing starts in 1-2 weeks, with full results visible in a few months as swelling fades. Following care instructions is essential for best recovery.
What position should I sleep in after a bichectomy?
After bichectomy, sleep on your back with your head elevated using extra pillows to reduce swelling and protect the surgical area.
Is Bichectomy a painful process?
Bichectomy is done under anesthesia, so the procedure is pain-free. After surgery, mild discomfort can be managed with prescribed painkillers.
What Are the Risks and Complications of Bichectomy?
Risks include infection, bleeding, poor healing, swelling, numbness, and possible dissatisfaction. Following your surgeon’s advice is essential for a safe recovery.
Tips for Bichectomy Recovery
Use ice packs and cold drinks to reduce swelling, wear a chin strap for two weeks, avoid touching stitches, eat soft foods, and quit smoking to support healing.

Prof. Dr. Rıfat Rasier
MD
BIOGRAPHY
During his medical education and specialization in ophthalmology, he attended Louisiana State University School of Medicine in the United States, Stadtisches Klinikum Kemperhof in Koblenz, Germany, and The Western Eye Hospital, Imperial College in England. In 2007, he received medical equivalence from the General Medical Council of England and became a fully registered doctor in England.
In addition to his ophthalmology education, he completed a master's program in Biomedical Engineering at Boğaziçi University in 2009.
Continuing his career development without slowing down, Rasier completed his specialization in Ophthalmology at Bilim University in 2010.
He fulfilled his mandatory service at Kırklareli State Hospital in 2012.
He attained the title of "Associate Professor" in the Department of Ophthalmology in 2016. He completed his PhD in Biomedical Engineering at Boğaziçi University with a 4.0 GPA in 2017.
As a result of his work at the Biomedical Engineering Laboratory of Boğaziçi University, Rıfat Rasier developed a procedure for laser-welding incisions in the transparent layer of the eye during cataract surgery, thereby closing the incision without the need for sutures. Current cataract surgeries either leave incisions open or suture them. Laser tissue welding experiments yielded positive results in closing incisions without stitches, reducing infection risks and shortening operation times.
This work by Rıfat Rasier was published in an international book titled "Infrared Lasers for Corneal Tissue Welding."
Awards Received:
Best Publication Award, Turkish Journal of Ophthalmology, 2010: "Corneal Tissue Welding with Infrared Lasers of Different Wavelengths in Transparent Corneal Sections."
Best Publication Award, Turkish Journal of Ophthalmology, 2011: "VEGF and IL-8 Levels in Vitreous Fluid in Proliferative Vitreoretinopathy Resulting from Rhegmatogenous Retinal Detachment."
JCI Ten Outstanding Young Persons of Turkey Award, First Prize in Medical and Medical Inventions, 2010.
Ministry of Industry, Teknogirişim Project Support, 2010.
Prof. Dr. Necati Tanyolaç Award for Projects and Research in Biomedical Engineering and Technologies during Master's or Doctorate Studies, 2017.
